It all started with a simple question: - Can Seavision deliver cameras and light system for our ROV?
Yes we can! was the natural answer to that question. And when we started to know our client, we immediately understood the actual need and in which way we could help and add value beyond just the cameras and lights.
The main challenge for our new client was that they were in the making of a new version 2 of the existing ROV. With the old version the camera and lighting system were not working properly, and it has always been a lot of problems, hiccups and downtime with it. Mostly lag, disturbance and black screens.
They wanted a new system that could take care of all the old problems.
What we did was that we started a project where we talked about issues that have been and addressed solutions to those problems. Wich led us to the need of using top quality components, redesign of the old system and a fiber cable setup to deal with disturbance and bad connection.
In this project nothing was off the shelf item, except our cameras and lights. But the configuration and setup were not.
Among other things, the client wanted to control the dimming of the lights from the web and have a system that was easy to manage and that could switch out components when the need changes.
Main depth of operation was 50m and total length from the ROV to topside was 110 meters. Operation time per day was said to be up to 20 hours. Something that meant that the system needed to be very robust and durable.
Design process stage 1:
We started at the drawing board to sketch our thoughts, simple and clear.
At the first stage it was important to make the outline of the system and ensure that we had a clear overview of the outline of the system.
Design process stage 2:
In stage two we needed to take into consideration what kind of components and units we needed to be inside the cylinder / junction box. At this stage all the step files of each components went into our design and simulation software, Inventor, for simulation and digital assembling.
Details and improvement were then worked on to be sure that everything fit together.
This stage is critical to have correct before “pulling the trigger” and get the components machined.
We went for cylinder in the highest grade of stainless steel, and we chose components only from well known makers. To ensure that the system was true to spec we needed to make some special parts in-house ourselves.
Testing:
Maybe one of the most important steps and maybe one of the easiest steps to overlook, testing-testing. All units are tested individually and after connected-up with each other.
Extended testing over 6 days was necessary to achieve certainty that the components meet their goals of quality.
The result is a system that can carry 4 cameras and 4 dimmable lights from web-interface that are easy to switch out and with a depth rating of 400m +. The main Subsea umbilical cord of 110m is a specially made cable with two (2) individual fiber and four (4) cobber cable to handle all the data and signals needed to operate everything.
